Dalglish coy on Scotland job

With the European and US Tours now over for the year, many professionals will be clocking up the air miles over the coming weeks in an attempt to keep their games ticking over – and collect some sizeable appearance fees in the process. This week’s event is the first of three big-money tournaments form Japan, and has attracted the likes of Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell from Tour.

Westwood is no stranger to the Far East having completed a hat-trick here in 1996-98, and that stacks up well against an excellent year in Europe which includes eight top-10 finishes, but surprisingly no win. That could be about to change this week, and he looks excellent value at 13/2, especially considering the Japanese Tour is lacking in any real stars. The best of the home contingent could be Shingo Katayama, who has managed 13 top-10 finishes in 14 starts including two victories, and not surprisingly tops the Money List.

Liverpool and Celtic football legend Kenny Dalglish has said he would be willing to talk to the Scottish Football Association (SFA) about the national manager’s job if he was approached, but insists he is not against another foreigner as Berti Vogts’ replacement.

So Scotland’s most-capped player is not about to apply for the job, but the Dalglish told BBC Sport: “If somebody came to speak to me then I would give them an answer.”

“But I am not going to prostitute myself for anyone.”

The former Liverpool, Blackburn and Newcastle manager is fellow national hero Denis Law’s choice for Scotland manager.

However, the ex-Rangers and Everton manager, Walter Smith, is still the strong favourite for the post, while Vogts’ former assistant, Tommy Burns, is also in the running after being named as caretaker.
